Patient Requirements and Prep

Send samples Monday thru Friday ONLY, on same day of collection.  Specimen should be received at ARUP within 24 hours of collection for optimal cell viability.  

Specimen Type

Whole blood, tissue or body fluid

Collection Container

Whole Blood: Lavender EDTA tube or Green Sodium Heparin tube.  Tissue: Tissue Culture Media.  Fluid: Plastic container with tightly fitting lid.

Required Volume

Whole Blood: 5 mL EDTA or Sodium Heparin.  Tissue: 100 mg fresh tissue in tissue culture media.  Fluid: 10 - 100 mL fresh fluid

Specimen Handling

Whole Blood: Do NOT centrifuge. Provide Wright stained smear (if available), CBC results and Diagnosis. Store and ship same day REFRIGERATED. Should  arrive in reference lab within 24 hours of collection. Tissue or Fluid: REFRIGERATE. Should arrive in reference lab within 24 hours of collection.  

Stability: Ambient: 48 hours; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: Unacceptable

Clinical Use

Aids in evaluation of hematopoietic neoplasms (ie, leukemia, lymphoma).  Use to monitor therapy in patients with established diagnosis of hematopoietic neoplasms.
